Understanding Diamonds

There are basically four main factors that determine a diamonds value. They are Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat weight. Examples of each of these are shown on our criteria page. The four C's, as these factors are known, effect the stones price in different levels. Each factor has a set of standardized criteria used to determine your stones value on the scale of that particular criteria.

Cut: How a diamond has been cut, polished and to what proportions, are of utmost importance since these factors determine the life, brilliance and lustre of the diamond.

Carat: The weight or size of a diamond is measured in Carats. A carat is 0.2 grams and there are 100 points (or 200 milligrams) per carat.

Clarity: In order to grade the clarity of a diamond, it is neccessary to ascertain the number and nature of any inclusions in the stone as well as their size and position.

Color: Most diamonds of gem quality vary in shade from colorless to yellow. All diamonds are graded against an internationally accepted master set of stones, which range from D (or colorless) to Z (the yellowest).

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the only industry accepted standard for an unbiased quality grade of a diamond. They issue a GIA certificate for each stone they grade. With this certificate, a diamond can be sold from dealer to dealer without the need for a second opinion. The certificate does not appraise or value the diamond, just rate the diamond based on the above mentioned criteria.
